Chapter 8 - The Final RequestThe grand master bedroom of the Vance manor felt cavernous. Eleanor lay in a high four-poster bed, monitors beeping faintly in the corner. Her hair, once styled with immaculate precision, spread like white silk against the bolster.

Clara entered quietly, holding Marcus’s hand for brief reassurance before stepping to the bedside.

Eleanor turned her head slowly. Her gaze dropped to Clara’s belly, which had grown full and round in the intervening months.

"You came," Eleanor whispered.

"I came to tell you that David forgave you before he died," Clara said softly. "He left a letter with his will. He knew you were afraid, Eleanor. He knew your cruelty came from fear of losing everything."

Tears spilled freely down the old woman's lined cheeks. She reached out a frail, spotted hand, her fingers trembling in the air. Clara did not pull away. She reached out and took the frail hand, letting warmth pass between them.

"Teach him... to be kind," Eleanor wept. "Do not teach him to conquer. Teach him to love."

"I will," Clara promised.

An hour before midnight, Eleanor Vance passed away in her sleep, surrounded not by lawyers or board members, but by the two people who had refused to let her wealth define their souls.
