Chapter 1 - The Silver Relic

The silence inside the sunlit dining room became deafening. Eleanor remained on her knees across the cold marble floor, her manicured hands trembling as she rummaged through her black designer handbag. Her polished exterior—built carefully over twenty-two agonizing years of social galas, pristine smiles, and empty anniversaries—crumbled within seconds. Arthur rose slowly from his leather dining chair, his face drawn tight with deep bewilderment and sudden fear. He looked between his wife and the young server, unsure whether Eleanor was suffering a sudden nervous breakdown.
The waitress, whose brass nametag read ""Chloe,"" took half a step backward. Her breath hitched. The ornate silver heart locket dangled loosely between her trembling fingers, catching the reflection of the crystal chandelier hanging overhead. It was warm from resting against her skin, an intimate piece of jewelry she had worn tucked inside her collared shirt every working day since childhood.
""Ma'am, please... get up,"" Chloe whispered, her voice cracking beneath the weight of dozens of curious stares from neighboring patrons and staff. ""You don't have to kneel. It’s just an old trinket.""
""No,"" Eleanor gasped, her breath catching violently in her chest. She pulled out a small, worn velvet pouch from the inner zipped pocket of her handbag. Her knuckles turned white as she opened it. From within, she drew an identical silver heart pendant—tarnished only slightly at the hinge, etched with an intricate filigree vine identical down to the smallest microscopic groove.
Arthur gasped softly, taking a step forward. He reached out to brace Eleanor’s shoulders, his fingers digging into the silk satin of her blouse. ""Eleanor... how can that be? That was made as a pair. The jeweler swore there was only one set commissioned.""
Eleanor did not hear him. Her tear-filled gaze shifted slowly from the pendant in her palm to the small, distinct dark heart-shaped birthmark situated on the back of Chloe’s wrist. She knew that mark. She had kissed that exact spot of warm baby skin during the stormy midnight hours in St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital before the nursery window had been smashed open twenty-two years ago.
""Where did you get this?"" Eleanor wept, her voice barely rising above a broken sob. ""Please, God... tell me who raised you.""

Chloe swallowed hard, clutching the silver locket against her throat as a cold shiver ran through her veins. ""I grew up in an orphanage three towns over,"" she murmured, her pulse hammering against her ribs. ""The matron told me it was found wrapped around my blanket when I was abandoned at the gates. But there was a name written on the ribbon inside.""
Eleanor’s tears spilled freely onto the marble tiles as she held her breath, waiting for the only name that mattered. But before Chloe could speak, the restaurant’s double kitchen doors swung open with a harsh crash, revealing a tall man in a dark trench coat scanning the dining room with cold, predatory eyes.
