Chapter 12 - The Iron Matriarch

The Vance estate was illuminated with bright floodlights when their unmarked transport arrived. Two state trooper cruisers stood guard at the wrought-iron gates, their lights flashing silently in the dense fog. Arthur led Eleanor and Chloe through the massive front entrance into the warmth of the marble foyer, where an elderly woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun stood waiting, leaning upon an ivory cane.
It was Evelyn Vance, Arthur’s mother—the ninety-year-old matriarch who had survived three wars, four decades of political turmoil, and the apparent loss of her eldest son.
Evelyn’s sharp blue eyes traveled down the hallway, bypassing Arthur and Eleanor entirely, until they locked squarely onto Chloe. The old woman’s breath hitched. Her ivory cane slipped from her hand, clattering against the polished tiles.
""My God..."" Evelyn breathed, her voice shaking with an emotion she had suppressed for over two decades. ""She has her grandmother's eyes. The exact Sterling eyes.""
Chloe stepped behind Eleanor slightly, intimidated by the grandeur of the mansion and the severe, aristocratic presence of the matriarch. But Eleanor reached back, gently taking Chloe’s hand and pulling her forward into the light.
""She’s home, Mother,"" Eleanor said, her voice firm, stripped of any lingering fear. ""Clara is home.""
Evelyn took two slow, unsteady steps forward and reached out with a wrinkled, trembling hand, lightly touching Chloe’s cheek. ""You look like the portraits in the west gallery, child. You carry the blood of seven generations of Vance women.""
""I don't know who I am yet,"" Chloe said quietly, holding Evelyn’s gaze with surprising steadiness. ""I’ve spent twenty-two years as Chloe Brooks, working two jobs to pay for community college. I don't know how to be a Vance.""
Evelyn let out a low, raspy chuckle, a rare warmth softening her proud features. ""Being a Vance doesn't mean wearing silk and sitting at banquets, child. It means you survived when they tried to erase you. That is all the proof of pedigree I need.""

The heavy front doors opened behind them, and David, Arthur’s trusted counselor, hurried in carrying a thick stack of legal briefs and a secure forensic kit.
""Judge Vance, Mrs. Vance,"" David said breathlessly, bowing his head respectfully toward Chloe. ""The medical examiner from the capital has arrived for the emergency swab. But we have a critical situation developing in the downtown press rooms.""
