Chapter 4 - The Hollow Foundation

Inside the leather-bound study of the Vance estate, the antique clock chimed three hollow tones. Heavy mahogany bookshelves and portraits of four generations of high-ranking jurists framed the room, but none of it could mask the suffocating atmosphere of dread. Arthur sat behind his expansive oak desk, staring blankly at the address scrawled on Chloe’s employee sheet.

""Why won't you show it to me?"" Eleanor demanded, pacing back and forth across the Persian rug. She had refused to change out of her stained cream blouse, her fingers continuously stroking the matching silver heart locket. ""You looked at that paper in the alley and went pale as ash. Who is harboring her, Arthur?""

Arthur leaned his head in his palms, his shoulders sagging beneath an invisible weight. ""The address listed for her emergency contact... it's the old boathouse on Blackwood Ridge.""

Eleanor froze in her tracks, the breath knocked entirely out of her lungs. ""Blackwood Ridge? Arthur, that property has been locked up since the trial. Only two people ever held deeds to that land.""

""I know,"" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling in a way Eleanor had never heard in thirty years of marriage. ""My late brother Julian... and your father.""

A suffocating chill settled over the room. Julian Vance had died in an unexplained single-vehicle crash twelve years earlier, shortly after resigning from his seat on the appellate court. Eleanor’s father, the legendary Supreme Court Justice Charles Sterling, had suffered a debilitating stroke around the exact same time, spending his remaining days in silent seclusion at an assisted-living facility.

""Are you saying our family was involved in her disappearance?"" Eleanor’s voice dropped to a horrifying whisper. ""Julian? My father? Are you telling me my baby was stolen by people who sat at our Thanksgiving table?""

""I don't know what to think, Eleanor,"" Arthur groaned, rising from his chair to pour two glasses of bourbon with hands that would not steady. ""Julian was always reckless with his gambling debts. But he adored you. He wouldn't have stolen his own niece... would he?""

Before Eleanor could answer, the red landline telephone on the corner of the desk—a direct line reserved solely for personal emergencies and private judicial matters—began to ring. Its shrill bell tore through the tension like a siren.

Arthur hesitated, then lifted the receiver with deliberate caution. ""Arthur Vance.""

""If you value your wife's sanity, Arthur, burn that personnel file and stay away from Blackwood Ridge,"" a distorted, mechanical voice spoke from the other end. ""Chloe doesn't know who she is. But if you keep digging, the world will learn what Julian did to keep your family’s fortune intact.""
