Chapter 3 - The Broken Thread

""Let her go!"" Eleanor screamed, the reserved dignity of her high-society upbringing completely dissolving into primal desperation. She kicked off her heels and surged forward across the polished floor, ignoring the gasps and frantic whispers of the horrified diners around them. Arthur lunged after her, shouting for the restaurant manager to call security and blockade the service exits.
The heavy swinging doors slammed shut behind Thorne and Chloe. By the time Eleanor burst through into the noisy, stainless-steel prep kitchen, the room was in total disarray. Pots and pans clattered across the tiled floor where the stranger had shoved past bewildered prep cooks.
""Stop that man!"" Arthur bellowed, flashing his magistrate credential at the head chef who stood frozen with a carving knife in midair.
Down the narrow delivery corridor, a heavy metal service door stood ajar, letting in the blinding glare of afternoon sunlight and the deafening roar of city traffic. Eleanor reached the threshold, gasping for breath as she stumbled out into the concrete loading alley.
A black sedan screeched toward the street, its tires leaving thick black streaks across the asphalt. Inside the rear window, Chloe’s face was pressed against the glass, her hazel eyes wide with terror as she desperately banged her palm against the pane. For a single fraction of a second, the sunlight caught the back of her raised wrist—the dark heart-shaped mark stark and visible against her pale skin.
""Chloe!"" Eleanor collapsed onto her knees upon the dirty concrete, reaching her hands into the empty air as the vehicle turned sharply onto the main boulevard and vanished into dense traffic.
Arthur reached her side, kneeling in the dirt without caring about his bespoke suit. He wrapped his arms around her shaking frame, pulling her head against his chest. ""We’ll find her, Eleanor. I swear to you on my life, we’ll find her. We have the license plate. We have his face.""

Eleanor shook her head in sheer despair, tears soaking Arthur’s silk tie. ""He knew our name, Arthur. He didn't hesitate. He knew you were a judge. He knew who we were.""
Arthur’s face darkened as he stared down at the concrete where the car had peeled away. A small object lay glistening near the grease traps—a torn silver chain with a broken clasp, left behind in the violent struggle. But as he bent to pick it up, he noticed something else sticking out of the trash bin nearby: a discarded restaurant folder labeled with Chloe’s personnel file, bearing an emergency contact address that made Arthur’s blood turn instantly to ice.
