Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Sunlight

The abrupt entrance of the man shattered the restaurant’s fragile quiet. He wore an unbuttoned dark trench coat, his face obscured beneath the low brim of a charcoal fedora. His piercing gray eyes swept past the stunned diners until they landed squarely upon Chloe’s trembling silhouette. Chloe froze, all color instantly draining from her pale face.
""Chloe,"" the man spoke, his baritone voice carrying a chillingly calm authority that commanded absolute obedience. ""Your shift ended ten minutes ago. We need to go home.""
Arthur stepped instinctively in front of Eleanor, his athletic frame shielding his wife. ""Excuse me, sir,"" Arthur said, projecting the stern authority of a veteran magistrate. ""Who are you to interrupt a private conversation? This young lady is speaking with my wife.""
The stranger offered a thin, humorless smile, keeping his hands buried deep inside the large pockets of his coat. ""I am her legal guardian. And you are trespassing on matters that do not concern you, Mr. Vance.""
Eleanor stood up abruptly, leaning heavily against Arthur’s arm. Her heart skipped a violent beat. ""You know our family name? How do you know who we are?""
The man ignored her question entirely, fixing his gaze upon the silver locket resting between Chloe's fingers. His jaw tightened in unmistakable annoyance. ""I told you never to wear that trash where people could see it, girl. Did you forget your lessons?""
Chloe took another tentative step back, her knuckles turning pale against her apron. ""Mr. Thorne... they have the matching half. Look at her hand. She has the exact same pendant.""
A momentary flash of panic flickered across Thorne’s rigid features before he masked it with practiced indifference. He reached into his coat and produced an old, weathered leather wallet, flipping it open to reveal an investigator’s badge. ""I don't care about cheap coincidences. There are dangerous people looking for orphans from the Saint Jude sector, Chloe. I warned you about con artists trying to take advantage of young workers.""
""Con artists?"" Arthur echoed incredulously, taking another defensive step forward. ""My wife is Eleanor Vance. We have spent twenty-two years funding every missing child registry in the state! You will explain where you took this child, or I will have the state troopers seal every exit in this building!""

Thorne smiled coldly, stepping backward toward the kitchen double doors. ""You won't call anyone, Vance. Not unless you want the rest of your family's dirty little secrets dragged into the morning press.""
Before Arthur could react, Thorne grabbed Chloe’s arm in a vice-like grip, yanking her violently backward toward the emergency exit corridor behind the kitchen pantry.
