Chapter 14 - The Final Confession

The sterile smell of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol filled Room 402 of the St. Jude Memorial Hospital—the very hospital where Clara Vance had been stolen from her bassinet twenty-two years before. An ironic, cruel circle of fate had brought them right back to the beginning.

In the center of the room, surrounded by cardiac monitors and IV drips, lay ninety-four-year-old Charles Sterling. His frail chest rose and fell beneath a thin hospital blanket. When the door opened and Eleanor walked in, followed closely by Arthur and Chloe, the old man’s cloudy eyes widened with sudden, electric clarity.

""Ellie..."" the old justice rasped, his voice whistling through dry lips.

Eleanor stopped at the foot of the bed, her face like carved stone. ""Don't call me that, Father. Tell me why. Look at her and tell her why you let them take her.""

Charles turned his trembling head toward Chloe. A single, heavy tear leaked from the corner of his eye, rolling across the deep age lines of his temple. ""Julian was... he was going to be executed by those animals, Ellie. He stole millions from their drug operations. They gave me twenty-four hours to produce the funds or they would slaughter my entire bloodline.""

""So you gave them my baby instead?"" Eleanor choked out, her fists clenching so hard her nails drew tiny crescents of blood in her palms.

""I didn't give her to them!"" Charles pleaded, coughing weakly as the monitor beeped in alarm. ""I hid her! I paid Thorne a fortune to raise her where the cartel would never look—among the working class, far away from the Sterling name. I made sure she was fed, educated, protected!""

""You put me in an unheated room and made me think I was garbage!"" Chloe’s voice cut through the sterile room like a razor blade. She stepped to the side of the bed, staring down at the pathetic, dying architect of her misery. ""You called yourself a justice? You broke the law, you betrayed your daughter, and you stole twenty-two years of my mother's life to save a gambling addict!""

Charles stared at her, crushed beneath the weight of her righteous indignation. ""Forgive me... please... I only wanted to protect the family...""

""You are not our family,"" Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a cold, unbreakable whisper. She pulled the two silver heart pendants from her pocket, dropping them onto the white sheets over his chest. ""Your legacy ends tonight, Father.""

The monitors began to flatline in a shrill, continuous tone as medical staff rushed into the room, but Eleanor, Arthur, and Chloe had already turned their backs, walking out into the corridor without looking behind them.
