Chapter 1 - Shattered Sugar and Broken GlassThe slap echoed beneath the five-tiered Austrian crystal chandelier, silencing three hundred guests in mid-breath.

Evelyn Vance lay sprawled among silk ribbons, crushed hydrangeas, and fractured gift boxes. Her lace champagne gown, tailored in Milan, was dusted with plaster and shattered mirrored glass. Just seconds before, her hand had struck six-year-old Toby across the cheek for daring to reach toward a dessert tower.
Claire did not raise her voice. She simply gathered Toby into her left arm, pressing his trembling cheek against her silk gown, and looked down at the woman who had spent a decade treating her like an unwelcome trespasser.
"You slapped my son," Claire said, her voice cutting through the stillness like a diamond blade. "At a wedding I paid for."
Julian, Claire’s younger brother and the groom whose lavish union she had financed down to the last handmade silver fork, stepped forward with palms raised. "Claire, please... don't make this ugly. Think of my career. Think of appearances."

Claire met her brother’s gaze. There was no rage in her eyes—only the cold, devastating clarity of someone who had finally realized she was setting herself on fire to keep ungrateful people warm.
"The check clears at midnight, Julian," Claire said softly, turning her back on the dais. "Cancel your honeymoon."
