That afternoon, Claire walked with Toby through the public botanical conservatory near his school. Toby was holding a sketchpad, drawing water lilies under the glass domes.
"Mom," Toby asked without looking up from his paper. "Are we poor?"
Claire sat beside him on the stone bench. "Why do you ask that?"
