Claire pulled into an all-night diner three miles off the highway—a modest, warmly lit brick haven with neon signs flickering in the mist.
"Come on, little man," Claire whispered, unbuttoning his tight bowtie.
Inside, an elderly waitress with kind crow's feet and an apron stained with coffee greeted them without judgment. Toby looked down at his patent leather shoes, still visibly shaken.
"What can I get for the sharpest young gentleman in the county?" the waitress asked warmly.
Toby peeked out from behind Claire's hip. "A strawberry tart? If... if it's okay."
"One tart, extra strawberries, coming right up," the waitress smiled.

When the plate arrived, Toby didn't eat immediately. He looked at Claire, his voice barely audible. "Mom... why did Aunt Julian’s new family hate us?"
Claire reached across the booth, wrapping both hands around his cold fingers. "They don't know who we are, Toby. People who measure human beings by price tags will always go bankrupt inside."
