Chapter 4 - A Whisper in the DarkBack in their townhouse on the quiet side of the city, Claire tucked Toby into bed. She applied a soothing lavender ointment to the faint red mark lingering on his cheekbone. He fell asleep holding his father’s old pocket compass—a battered brass keepsake that reminded him of true north.

Claire sat at her mahogany desk in the adjoining study, the glow of her laptop illuminating the dark room. Her phone was lighting up relentlessly.

Julian (14 missed calls) Evelyn Vance (3 voicemails) Sophia Vance-Kendrick (8 text messages) Her new sister-in-law, Sophia, had texted: You ruined the most important night of my life over an unruly child and a piece of pastry. Apologize to my mother, or you are dead to this family.

Claire did not reply. Instead, she opened a folder labeled Acquisitions & Mortgages.
