"What do you want from me?" Evelyn asked, her pride cracking like cheap porcelain.
"A public retraction," Claire stated. "A handwritten apology to Toby. And a two-hundred-thousand-dollar contribution to the City Children's Hospital Burn and Trauma Unit—paid directly from your personal account, with no naming rights."
Evelyn gasped. "That is extortion!"

"No," Claire said softly, turning toward her front door. "That is restitution. Take it or leave it. But if you walk away now, Clearwater Capital will foreclose on the Vance ancestral estate on Monday morning for unpaid bridge loans."
Evelyn stood paralyzed on the stone walkway as Claire closed the door behind her.
