Chapter 10 - The Unseen Counterattack

The media storm raged outside, but inside the dim boat hangar, silence reigned except for the rhythmic clicking of Elena’s fingers across the terminal keys. The quantum drive unspooled gigabytes of encrypted files: wiretap recordings, falsified shipping manifests, shell corporation tax evasion schemes, and signed receipts from compromised federal officials.

"First target: Deputy Director Hayes," Elena instructed Marcus, who was routing the data through twelve decentralized proxy servers across Iceland and Switzerland. "Send the video file of him accepting two million dollars in bearer bonds at the Zurich private bank directly to the Internal Affairs Inspector General and every major investigative journalist in Washington."

"Transmitting now," Marcus said, watching the progress bar leap to one hundred percent. "Second target: Judge Thornton. We have the offshore accounts Victor used to pay off his daughter’s luxury real estate in Aspen."

"Blast it to the State Judicial Ethics Committee and the Department of Justice public corruption task force," Elena commanded. "Do not leak it under Sovereign's name. Use a dead-drop routing identity labeled 'The Sterling Truth Project.'"

Within forty-five minutes, the political and legal blockade Victor had carefully erected began to shatter like cheap glass.

Across the country, cable news networks suddenly broke away from their coverage of Elena’s alleged fugitive status. Live news anchors stammered as unprecedented leaks hit the wire services.

"We are receiving breaking reports that federal authorities have executed an emergency arrest warrant against Deputy Director Hayes of the FBI’s New York Field Office..." the news anchor announced, visibly bewildered. "...Simultaneously, federal marshals have reportedly taken senior federal judge Harrison Thornton into custody on charges of treasonous bribery and racketeering."

On the cot, Lily stirred, rubbing her eyes. She sat up, looking around the shadowy room before spotting Elena. "Mommy? Is Grandma still coming to get us?"

Elena walked over, sitting on the edge of the cot and pulling the little girl into her lap. "No, my love. Grandma and her friends are very busy right now dealing with their own mistakes."

Marcus’s phone buzzed with an encrypted alert. He glanced at the display, a grim smile touching his lips. "The federal warrant against you has been formally rescinded by the Department of Justice. The New York Attorney General has just opened an emergency criminal investigation into the entirety of the Sterling family."

"We are clear legally," Elena said, nodding slowly. "Now, we deal with the monster himself."

"Victor has gone completely dark," Marcus cautioned. "He knows the leaks came from the Black Ledger. He’s abandoning his mainland assets and retreating to his primary offshore fortress."

"The yacht," Elena deduced instantly. "The Leviathan. It’s docked at the deep-water terminal in Atlantic City, preparing to leave for international waters."

"He’ll take Richard and Beatrice with him," Marcus noted. "They know too much to be left behind to face federal prosecutors."

Elena stood up, tucking Lily’s hair behind her ear. "Prepare the strike craft. We settle this on the water."
