Chapter 11 - The Golden Cage

Aboard The Leviathan, a three-hundred-foot mega-yacht moored at the edge of the private marina, the atmosphere was thick with dread. Rain lashed against the armored glass of the grand salon, where Beatrice Sterling sat shivering in a mink coat, clutching an empty crystal tumbler.

"He took everything from me!" Beatrice sobbed hysterically, her mascara running in dark streaks down her hollow cheeks. "The FBI raided my penthouse! They seized my jewelry, my cars, my art collection! They treated me like a common criminal!"

Richard paced the length of the salon, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild with terror. "You don't understand, Mother! The leaks... they have my signatures on the shell corporation accounts! They’re charging us with federal racketeering! If this boat doesn't leave US waters in twenty minutes, we’re spending the rest of our lives in a maximum-security prison!"

The heavy steel door of the salon slid open, and Victor walked in, surrounded by four armed private guards. His face was thunderous, the cool, aristocratic veneer completely stripped away.

"Quiet, both of you!" Victor roared, slamming his walking stick onto the teak floor with such force that Beatrice jumped. "Your incompetence has destroyed forty years of careful planning! Beatrice, your pathetic vanity at that gala triggered the collapse of our entire empire!"

"My vanity?" Beatrice gasped, rising to her feet with indignant fury. "You told me to keep Elena subdued! You told me she was a nobody who needed to be reminded of her place so she wouldn't look into Richard’s trust funds!"

"I told you to manage her, not publicly humiliate her child in front of sixty cameras, you imbecile!" Victor spat, stepping directly into her space. "She wasn't a nobody. She held the master switch to the entire financial system that was keeping us alive. And now, she has burned it all to the ground."

"Father, what do we do?" Richard begged, grabbing Victor’s sleeve like a frightened child. "Where are we going?"

"We are crossing into international waters," Victor said, yanking his arm away in disgust. "I have private banking reserves in Dubai that she hasn't discovered yet. Once we clear the maritime border, we will be beyond the reach of federal extradition."

Suddenly, the yacht’s massive engines sputtered, the deep vibration beneath their feet cutting out completely. The interior lights flickered twice and plunged into pitch-black darkness, replaced seconds later by the ominous red glow of emergency battery backups.

"What happened?" Victor barked, reaching for his radio. "Captain! Why have the engines stopped?"

Static hissed through the radio before a smooth, calm voice broke through the channel.

"Because I own the navigation and satellite grid of this vessel, Victor," Elena’s voice echoed through the yacht’s intercom system. "You aren't going anywhere."

A sudden deafening thump shook the upper deck as grappling lines secured themselves to the ship’s railings.
