Chapter 13 - The Reckoning

The blue and red flashing lights of twenty federal cruisers illuminated the Atlantic City marina, painting the luxury yachts in violent shades of crimson and sapphire.

Handcuffs clicked shut around Victor Sterling’s wrists as federal marshals led him down the gangplank. The proud patriarch walked with a hunched back, his head bowed against the glare of news cameras that had swarmed the perimeter fences.

Behind him came Richard, weeping openly, his face buried in his hands as reporters shouted questions about the multi-billion-dollar fraud indictments.

Finally, two female marshals escorted Beatrice Sterling down the ramp. Her once-immaculate hair was wildly tangled, her designer clothes stained with spilled wine and soot. As she reached the bottom of the ramp, she caught sight of Elena standing beside an armored black town car.

Beatrice broke away from the marshals, stumbling toward Elena before the agents grabbed her arms, holding her back.

"Elena!" Beatrice wailed, her voice cracking with pure desperation. "Please! Call them off! Tell them it was all a misunderstanding! I can't go to prison... I'll die in there! Please, for Lily’s sake, don't do this to her grandmother!"

Elena walked slowly toward the ruined matriarch, stopping just inches away. She looked Beatrice up and down with an expression of quiet, devastating pity.

"Lily doesn't have a grandmother named Beatrice," Elena said, her voice clear and carrying over the murmurs of the gathered press. "Her grandmother died the second you poured that bucket of dirty water over her head."

"You're a monster!" Beatrice shrieked, thrashing against the marshals' grip as they pulled her toward the waiting transport van. "A cold-blooded monster!"

"No, Beatrice," Elena replied coldly. "I'm just a mother."

Elena turned her back on the screaming woman, walking toward her town car. Marcus opened the rear passenger door for her, his expression filled with deep respect.

"All federal seizure notices have been officially filed, Director," Marcus reported. "Every asset belonging to the Sterling estate—the properties, the trusts, the art collections, the corporate holdings—has been absorbed into the Sovereign Reparations Fund under Lily’s name."

"And the family name?" Elena asked, sliding into the leather interior.

"Dissolved," Marcus smiled slightly. "Sterling Holdings no longer exists. Tomorrow morning, the press release announces the creation of the Lily Vance Global Children's Foundation."

Elena leaned back against the headrest, feeling the immense weight of the past forty-eight hours finally lifting from her chest. "Take me home, Marcus. My daughter is waiting."
