Chapter 6 - The Breach

Elena’s blood ran cold. The calm corporate triumph vanished in a microsecond, replaced by raw, primal panic.
"Lock down the safe room immediately!" Elena barked into the phone, rising from the chairman’s desk so violently that her chair spun backward. "Marcus, mobilize the rapid response chopper to the roof. Now!"
Marcus didn't ask questions. He was already speaking rapidly into his tactical radio, calling for the Sovereign aviation unit stationed atop Sterling Tower. Behind them, the boardroom executives scattered, sensing that the corporate takeover had abruptly turned into a violent battlefield.
Through the receiver, Elena could hear the distant blare of the estate’s tactical alarm system, followed by the muffled crack of stun rounds.
"They have heavy gear, Director Vance!" the operative shouted over the static. "They aren't private investigators. These are professional mercenaries! They’re bypassing external defenses—"
A sharp explosion rattled the line, followed by the dead buzz of a severed connection.
"Lily!" Elena screamed, but only static answered.
She sprinted through the executive corridor, kicking off her heels as she reached the emergency stairs leading to the helipad. Marcus followed closely behind, carrying a compact tactical case. Wind whipped wildly across the rooftop as the black twin-engine helicopter’s rotors roared to life.
Elena vaulted inside the cabin, strapping herself into the harness while Marcus handed her an encrypted communication headset.
"Flight time to upstate is twelve minutes," Marcus yelled over the turbine deafening whine. "Local tactical teams have been alerted, but the estate is isolated in the valley. Who knew Lily was there, Elena? We established that safehouse three years ago under triple-blind trusts."
Elena gripped the armrests until her knuckles turned snow-white. Her mind raced through every interaction, every detail of the morning. Richard was too weak and incompetent to organize a tactical strike, and Beatrice was already a ruined wreck.
"Someone else is bankrolling them," Elena realized, her jaw clenching with lethal intensity. "Beatrice isn't the apex predator. She was just the public face."
As the helicopter banked hard over the Hudson River, speeding north toward the Hudson Valley, Elena brought up the estate’s secondary satellite feed on her tablet.
The screen flickered, bypassing the jammed local relays. The main courtyard of the sprawling stone manor was shrouded in smoke. Two black tactical vehicles were parked near the entrance, and three armed figures were carrying a small, struggling figure wrapped in a dark blanket toward the rear vehicle.
"They have her," Elena choked out, tears of sheer rage finally spilling down her face. "They have my daughter."
Suddenly, the encrypted tablet in her lap pinged with a direct, unauthorized video transmission.

Elena swiped the screen. The video feed opened to reveal a lavish, dim study. Sitting in a high-backed leather chair was an older man with silver hair, cold blue eyes, and an antique signet ring resting against the rim of a crystal whiskey glass.
"Good morning, Director Vance," the man spoke, his voice smooth as velvet and chillingly familiar. "Or should I say... daughter-in-law?"
