Chapter 7 - The True Patriarch

"Victor Sterling," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with hatred.
Victor had supposedly died seven years ago in a private jet crash off the coast of Monaco. His tragic demise had paved the way for Beatrice to inherit the family throne and thrust their naive son, Richard, into the corporate spotlight. The entire empire believed the legendary founder of the Sterling Dynasty was long buried beneath marble in the family mausoleum.
"Reports of my death were, as they say, greatly exaggerated," Victor smiled, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. "A necessary fiction to avoid international regulatory scrutiny while I restructured our black-market logistics networks across South America."
"Where is Lily?" Elena demanded, her voice vibrating with venom. "If a single hair on her head is harmed, Victor, I will spend every penny of Sovereign’s hundreds of billions to hunt you to the ends of the earth and rip your empire apart with my bare hands."
Victor chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. "I have no desire to harm my granddaughter, Elena. She carries Sterling blood, after all. But Beatrice was a fool. She let petty domestic spite blind her to who you truly were. I knew the moment you married Richard that you were the mysterious ghost behind Sovereign Trust."
Elena stared at the screen as the helicopter cut through the heavy cloud cover over the valley below. "You let Beatrice play the cruel villain to distract me."
"Precisely," Victor said smoothly. "Beatrice’s foolish little theater at the gala served its purpose. It forced you to step out of the shadows, reveal your assets, and execute Protocol Zero. You consolidated all your corporate holdings into one centralized clearinghouse to crush us this morning. Which means... all your capital is currently liquid and vulnerable."
The helicopter began its rapid descent toward the estate's smoking lawn. Marcus signaled to Elena, cocking his tactical sidearm and preparing the team for a hot landing.
"What do you want, Victor?" Elena asked, her eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"Your digital keys," Victor answered flatly. "Transfer full ownership of Sovereign Trust to my offshore blind entity within the next thirty minutes. Once the funds clear, Lily will be returned to you completely unharmed. Refuse, or miss the deadline by a single second, and she will be placed on a private freighter heading across the Atlantic. You will spend the rest of your life looking for a ghost."
The screen abruptly went black.
The helicopter’s skids slammed onto the turf of the estate. Elena ripped off her headset, grabbed a tactical vest from the cabin locker, and leaped onto the grass. The air smelled of burnt rubber and gunpowder.

Marcus sprinted ahead, surveying the perimeter before turning back to Elena. "They evacuated through the southern tree line toward the old logging road! We have satellite tracking on one of their transport vans!"
Elena wiped the rain and soot from her cheek, her eyes blazing with a mother's unyielding fury. "Prep the intercept team. They think they’ve backed a cornered mother into a cage. Let's show them the beast they just unleashed."
