Chapter 8 - The Forest Hunt

The heavy tactical SUV tore down the rutted mud of the abandoned logging trail, tree branches whipping violently against the armored windshield. Elena sat in the passenger seat, gripping an assault carbine she hadn't touched since her former days as an operative for international corporate intelligence.
"Target vehicle is two miles ahead, heading for an unregistered private airstrip in Bear Mountain," Marcus called out, keeping both hands firmly on the wheel as the SUV slid around a steep, muddy switchback.
"They don't know we have direct satellite override," Elena said, monitoring the tiny pulsing red beacon on her dashboard console. "Lily’s dress had an emergency micro-transponder woven into the hemline of her slip. I installed it years ago."
Ahead through the dense pine forest, the taillights of the mercenaries' black van flashed through the mist. The kidnappers realized they were being pursued; the rear doors of the van kicked open, and a gunman poked a high-caliber rifle through the gap, unleashing a spray of suppressive fire.
Bullets hammered against the SUV’s reinforced ballistic glass with deafening spiderweb cracks.
"Hold on!" Marcus shouted, swerving hard to minimize the impact zone.
Elena lowered her side window just two inches, rested the barrel of her carbine on the ledge, and exhaled slowly. The world seemed to slow to a crawl. She didn't see mercenaries; she saw monsters who had terrorized her little girl.
She squeezed the trigger in three precise, controlled bursts.
The first two rounds struck the van’s rear suspension; the third punctured the left rear tire. The van wobbled violently, fishtailing across the slick mud before careening off the road and slamming sideways into a massive oak tree.
"Move! Move!" Elena yelled, kicking her door open before their SUV had even come to a full stop.
Four tactical operatives poured out alongside her, weapons raised, sweeping the wreckage. Two mercenaries crawled from the cab, groaning, but dropped their weapons the instant they saw five red laser dots resting on their chests.
Elena ripped the mangled rear door open.
Inside, huddled in a corner behind an overturned cargo box, was Lily, still wrapped in the blanket. Her face was smudged with soot, tears carving clean trails down her cheeks, but she was conscious.
"Mommy!" Lily wailed, throwing her tiny arms out.
Elena dropped her weapon, lunged into the cabin, and swept her daughter into an iron embrace. She buried her face in Lily’s hair, breathing in the scent of baby shampoo beneath the smoke. "I’ve got you, baby. Mommy’s here. You're safe."
Marcus approached the van, his expression grim as he held up a radio recovered from the driver.
"Elena," Marcus said quietly. "Victor knows the ambush failed. And he just activated the secondary phase of his plan."
May you like
Elena pulled back, gently wiping Lily’s tears, before turning to Marcus. "What secondary phase?"
"He released the full footage of the gala online," Marcus said, his voice tight. "Along with a fabricated financial dossier claiming you used Sovereign Trust to embezzle millions from public pension funds. The FBI just issued a federal freeze warrant for your arrest."
