Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the Courthouse

The morning of the custody hearing brought gray skies and relentless autumn rain. The county family courthouse smelled of wet wool and floor polish. Julian, clad in a sharp charcoal suit with Marcus at his side, walked through the security gates to find Vanessa waiting near the courtroom doors.
She looked pristine in a navy designer dress, flanking two high-powered litigation attorneys. But the confidence in her posture lacked roots; her eyes darted nervously as Julian approached.
"We can still settle this, Julian," Vanessa said in a hushed, sharp tone as her attorneys conferred nearby. "Agree to release Michael's commercial property trust to my management company, and I will withdraw the petition for Lily’s conservatorship. You keep the girl; I keep the financial compensation for the two years I wasted on your family."
Julian looked at her with pure detachment. "You truly think love is just an exchange of equity, don't you?"
"This world runs on equity, Julian," she retorted coldly. "Don't act so holy. You’re sacrificing your bachelorhood and your career for a child who will barely remember Michael in ten years."
"She will remember who stayed," Julian said softly. "And she will know who tried to sell her out."

Marcus stepped up, tapping Julian’s shoulder. "Judge Harrison is on the bench. It’s time."
Julian walked past Vanessa without another glance, leaving her standing alone beneath the fluorescent lights.
