Chapter 11 - The Verdict of Truth

Inside the wood-paneled courtroom, Judge Eleanor Harrison, a stern woman in her late sixties, reviewed the filings with visible impatience. Vanessa’s lead attorney opened with a theatrical monologue, depicting Julian as an overworked corporate executive whose chaotic lifestyle made him incapable of providing stability to a traumatized young girl.
"My client seeks only to honor the decedent’s unspoken wishes by placing the child in an environment structured for grief recovery," the attorney argued smoothly.
Judge Harrison adjusted her spectacles. "Mr. Vance? Your response?"
Marcus stood calmly. "Your Honor, we submit Exhibit D: an authenticated audio recording recovered from Michael Vance’s personal effects, accompanied by time-stamped surveillance footage from his residence dated three weeks prior to his passing."
Vanessa stiffened beside her legal counsel.
The courtroom fell dead silent as Michael’s rasping voice echoed through the speakers, detailing Vanessa’s attempts to coerce his signature while he lay bedridden. As Michael's voice described her photographing his private documents, the court reporter stopped typing, and Judge Harrison’s expression hardened into granite.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, "we have forensic proof that the signature on the proposed conservatorship rider presented by the petitioner was digitally transposed from Michael Vance’s living will. This is not a custody dispute, Your Honor. This is an attempted grand larceny against a minor ward."

Judge Harrison took off her glasses. She looked at Vanessa’s legal team, whose lead attorney was already leaning over to whisper furiously to an ashen-faced Vanessa.
"Petition denied with prejudice," Judge Harrison ruled, her gavel cracking against the sound block like thunder. "The court refers this matter immediately to the State Attorney’s Office for criminal investigation of fraud and forgery. Sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance remains exclusively with Julian Vance."
