Chapter 2 - The Envelope Behind the Clock

Julian stood slowly, never letting go of Lily's hand. He felt the child shrink behind his leg, her small fingers bunching the fabric of his trousers. The bride's face softened into a rehearsed smile, but Julian had spent years running an architectural firm; he knew when a foundation was cracking under cosmetic plaster.
"Lily says she was asked to hide something," Julian said quietly, keeping his voice level.
Vanessa chuckled, a light, melodic sound that didn't reach her eyes. "Darling, children invent games under stress. The photographer is waiting. We can indulge her imaginary treasure hunt after the vows."
"It’s not a game," Lily sobbed, peering out. "You said Uncle Julian’s house belongs to you now."
Vanessa's painted smile froze. A flicker of panic breached her manicured facade before she masked it with indignation. "Julian, she’s confused. My brother passed only six months ago—she’s still traumatized. You’re going to humiliate us over the ramblings of a grieving child?"
Julian looked down at Lily, whose hazel eyes were wide and pleading. He recalled his late brother, Michael, whose final weeks had been clouded by sudden illness. Julian had promised Michael on his deathbed that Lily would always have a home, safety, and love.

Without a word, Julian walked past Vanessa to the antique pendulum clock at the corridor’s apex. Vanessa lunged forward, her veil snagging on the brass wall sconce. "Julian, stop! Don't ruin our day!"
He reached behind the heavy mahogany casing. His fingers brushed against crisp manila cardstock. He pulled it out: a thick legal envelope, still unsealed, bearing the seal of Michael’s former probate attorney.
