Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

The heavy parchment felt like lead in Julian’s hand. He flipped open the flap, scanning the first page under the halogen corridor lights. The text was brutal in its clarity: a petition for total custodial transfer of Lily to a private boarding facility abroad, paired with an emergency liquidation rider for Michael’s estate assets—bequeathed in trust to Lily—funneling all conservator fees directly into an offshore account registered in Vanessa’s maiden name.
Vanessa stood rigid, her knuckles white around her bouquet of white lilies. "You weren't supposed to find that until after the registry was signed."
Julian stared at the woman he had loved for two years. "You planned to send my brother’s orphan across the Atlantic while we were on our honeymoon?"
"She is a reminder of your past!" Vanessa hissed, dropping the facade entirely as her voice dropped into a venomous whisper. "You spend half your time parenting her. We were supposed to build our own empire, Julian! She has millions sitting in a trust fund while you plan to sacrifice our future to raise someone else's kid!"
"She is Michael's daughter," Julian said, each syllable carved from iron. "And she is my daughter now."

"You sign those wedding papers, or I walk," Vanessa threatened, her chest heaving. "And if I walk, I take half the pre-marital estate guarantees your lawyers drafted last week. Think about your reputation. The guests are sitting right out there."
Julian looked past her toward the glowing archway of the chapel. He didn't see high society or social ruin. He saw Lily, trembling in the hallway corner, watching the only anchor she had left.
