Chapter 6 - The Quiet House

The sprawling suburban house felt cavernous when they arrived home that evening. The silence was deafening, amplified by the abandoned floral centerpieces Julian’s sister-in-law had sent ahead the day before. Julian discarded his formal jacket over the banister, unbuttoned his collar, and went to work making simple grilled cheese sandwiches while Lily sat at the kitchen island, drawing on scrap paper.

Every few minutes, Lily would look up from her crayons, checking to ensure he was still by the stove. The fear of disappearance hung over her like an invisible thread.

"Uncle Julian?"

"Right here, Lily-bug."

"Did Daddy know you would take care of me?"

Julian set the spatula down and walked over to her side. He pulled out a barstool and sat down, meeting her level gaze. "Your dad and I had a talk before he went to sleep in the hospital. He said, 'Julian, she’s made of sunlight. Don't let anyone cast a shadow on her.' I promised him I’d always stand in front of the clouds."

Lily pointed her yellow crayon at the paper. "Vanessa was a cloud."

"Yes," Julian admitted without bitterness. "She was. But the sky is clear now."

That night, Julian read three extra bedtime stories until Lily’s breathing deepened into steady, dreamless sleep. Sitting in the armchair beside her bed in the dark, Julian pulled out his laptop and typed an email to his firm’s partners: he was stepping down as managing director to take an indefinite leave of absence.
