Chapter 8 - Echoes of Michael

Julian spent the following week sifting through Michael’s personal archives stored in the attic. The dust danced in the sunbeams that cut through the small dormer windows. Every box opened was a wound reopened: Michael’s worn leather jackets, his architectural blueprints, albums filled with photos of Lily taking her first steps.

In a weathered leather satchel tucked beneath old tax forms, Julian found Michael’s bedside voice recorder. Michael, an architect who lived by vocal memos, had used it when his hands became too weak from arthritis to write.

Julian pressed play, his thumb trembling against the faded plastic.

A click, followed by Michael’s familiar, rasping voice: “October 14th. Vanessa visited today while Julian was at the site inspection. She brought documents. Kept asking me to sign an amendment about Lily’s school trust. Said Julian wouldn't want the burden. I told her Julian would cross an ocean on foot for that girl. She didn't like that. Caught her photographing my signature off the living will draft. If anything happens to me, Julian needs to look at the security camera logs from the library.”

Julian sat down hard on an old storage trunk, a tear slipping down his cheek. "You saw through her all along, brother," he whispered into the empty attic.

He grabbed the recorder and the memory card from the old study camera. The battle was no longer about defense; it was about bringing truth into the open.
