Chapter 5 - Stepping into the Sunlight

Julian walked out into the sanctuary alone, holding Lily’s hand. The murmurs among the two hundred seated guests died down instantly as they took in the groom without his boutonnière and the absence of a bride. Julian stepped up to the altar steps, raised his hand to quiet the organist, and addressed the room with clear, steady dignity.
"There will be no wedding today," Julian announced, his voice carrying effortlessly through the vaulted nave. "I apologize for the inconvenience to you all. Please enjoy the reception, celebrate life, and cherish the loved ones sitting beside you. Today, my priorities found their true home."
He didn't wait for the inevitable gasps or the eruption of whispers. He turned, scooped Lily up into his arms, and walked down the center aisle. For the first time all morning, the little girl rested her head on his shoulder, her tiny fingers tangling peacefully in his lapel.
Outside, the mid-afternoon sun was blinding. The crisp autumn air bit at their cheeks, carrying the scent of fallen oak leaves and damp earth. Julian carried her straight to his car, leaving behind the flowers, the catering tiers, and the curated illusion of a life built on compromise.
"Where are we going?" Lily asked, blinking in the bright afternoon light as Julian buckled her securely into the backseat.
May you like
"Wherever we want," Julian replied, looking in the rearview mirror with a calm he hadn't known in years. "First stop: diner pancakes with extra whipped cream."
A genuine, sunlit giggle broke from Lily’s lips, shattering the ghost of the morning.
