Chapter 11 - The Vanishing Heir

"Target in the water!" an agent screamed, rushing to the stern with life rings and high-powered searchlights.
The powerful beams swept the frothing white wake behind the mega-yacht. Elena rushed to the rail, clutching Leo and Mia tightly against her sides. The turbulent, freezing waters of the Atlantic were churning with merciless violence under the offshore storm. For three agonizing seconds, a pale flash of cashmere bobbed on the crest of a dark wave fifty yards out—before being pulled under by the immense down-current of the yacht’s twin props.
She did not resurface.
"Coast Guard units, begin maritime search and rescue protocols," the lead federal agent barked into his shoulder radio. "Deploy thermal divers immediately."
Within minutes, the aft deck of The Gilded Sovereign was fully secured. Heavy-set tactical agents knelt down beside Leo and Mia, wrapping them in thick thermal shock blankets and offering warm foil packs of sweet broth. A female medic immediately began examining Leo's wrist abrasions and checking his breathing, while Mia refused to let go of Elena’s uniform sleeve, clutching the starched white fabric like an anchor.
"Miss Elena Vance?" a man in a dark navy windbreaker approached, flashing a gold badge bearing the emblem of the Department of Justice. His hair was cropped gray, his face weathered with thirty years of federal investigative work. "I’m Special Agent Thomas. Your uncle Frank gave us coordinates forty minutes ago. You have any idea what you just pulled out of that house?"
Elena took a ragged breath, the salt spray drying against her bruised skin. "A nightmare. She was cloning or breeding them... harvesting them for her own medical treatments."
Agent Thomas knelt beside Leo, his jaw tightening as he examined the surgical scar along the boy's ribs. "We’ve been tracking an offshore biomedical syndicate based out of Cyprus for six months. Van Doren wasn't just a client, Miss Vance. She was the primary shareholder and investor. The laboratory she built wasn't just beneath her estate—she had facilities scattered across three continents."
Elena looked at Leo, whose eyes were heavy with exhaustion. "What happens to them now?"
"Child Protective Services and federal protective custody," Thomas said gently. "They'll be placed under the witness security program once we finish our sweeps. There are no legal birth certificates for them on file anywhere in this country."
"No," Leo spoke up, his voice cracking with quiet firmness. He pointed to Elena. "She stays with us. If she's not there, I won't talk to anyone. I won't answer your questions. I won't sign your papers."
Thomas looked between the gaunt young boy and the young maid whose hands were covered in lacerations, grease, and dried blood. A faint, sympathetic nod broke through the agent’s stern features. "We can arrange temporary custodial designation while processing. But Miss Vance... the estate isn't clear yet."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked, a sudden chill creeping down her spine.

Thomas tapped his tablet, bringing up a live tactical feed from the Van Doren mansion on the mainland. The screen showed smoke rising from the grand ballroom, swathes of police tape, and federal agents moving through the gardens.
"When our strike team breached the subterranean vault where you found the boy," Thomas said grimly, "they found four more holding chambers. All four were opened from the inside less than an hour ago. There are other children out there, Elena. And someone else took them before we arrived."
