Chapter 13 - The Safehouse Protocol

By noon, the federal transport convoy arrived at a secluded cabin nestled deep within the pine forests of upstate New York, three hundred miles from the coastal metropolis. The cabin was reinforced with ballistic glass, redundant generator power, and surrounded by motion sensors buried beneath the forest floor.

For the first time in their lives, Leo and Mia sat down at a kitchen table that wasn't locked behind iron bars. A plate of scrambled eggs, toasted bread, and fresh fruit sat between them. Mia picked at a strawberry with cautious, trembling curiosity, looking up at Elena as if waiting for a reprimand that never came.

"Go ahead, sweetheart," Elena said gently, sitting beside her and smoothing down the girl’s unruly blonde hair. "It's all yours."

Mia took a small bite, her eyes lighting up with wonder, before devouring the rest of the plate with the ravenous hunger of a child who had known only nutritional paste and rationed water. Leo ate more slowly, his eyes constantly scanning the windows and door frames, his instincts still locked in survival mode.

"They're not going to let this go, Elena," Leo said quietly, lowering his fork. "The people in that book... they aren't just rich. They run the companies that make the surveillance satellites. They own the private security firms that train the police."

"They don't own us," Elena said firmly, placing her hand over his bruised knuckles. "Your uncle Frank is already across the Canadian border, setting up a safe passage. Agent Thomas is filing federal indictments under direct seal with the Deputy Attorney General."

A sharp chime sounded from the encrypted satellite phone Thomas had left on the kitchen counter. Elena stood up, answering on speaker.

"Elena, it's Thomas," the agent’s voice was clipped, breath short, accompanied by the background roar of high-speed highway transit. "We have a catastrophic breach."

Elena’s heart plummeted. "What happened?"

"The local field office in the city was hit," Thomas said, his tone grim with fury. "A private security transport escorted two men posing as Department of Defense liaisons into the evidence lockup. They took Marcus from his holding cell and executed the two guarding marshals. Marcus is alive, and he has access to the secondary tracking network."

"What secondary network?" Elena demanded, stepping toward the window to check the tree line. "We cut Leo’s locator out! Mia never had one!"

"Not the children, Elena," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking with horrifying realization. "Your phone. The one you used to illuminate the passage behind the portrait. Marcus’s technical team cloned your device's IMSI number from the mansion's internal Wi-Fi router. They aren't tracking the kids... they're tracking you."

Elena froze, looking down at the dead mobile phone resting in her coat pocket.

At that exact second, outside in the peaceful silence of the pine forest, the high-pitched hum of high-voltage perimeter tripwires sounded, followed by the muffled thud of an explosive breach at the front security gate.
