Chapter 14 - Siege in the Pines

"Into the storm cellar! Move!" Elena yelled, scooping Mia into her arms while grabbing Leo by the collar.
The front windows of the cabin exploded inward in a blizzard of pulverized glass and wood splinters as heavy-caliber rounds tore through the living room. Elena dropped flat, shielding both children with her body as slugs shredded the sofa, the kitchen cabinets, and the porcelain plates into white dust.
The assault team was professional and ruthless. They weren't using sirens or shouting commands; they moved in absolute tactical silence, four men in gray unmarked combat plate advancing through the smoke, their carbines equipped with suppressors that coughed rhythmic bursts of lethal lead.
Elena kicked open the iron hatch to the cabin’s root cellar beneath the kitchen linoleum. "Down, both of you! Lock the bolt from underneath and do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice!"
"No, Elena! Come with us!" Leo cried, tears finally breaking through his stoic composure, clinging to her torn uniform sleeve.
"I have to draw them away from the floor hatch," Elena said, her voice shaking but resolute. She shoved the children into the dark brick space, slammed the heavy oak door shut, and slid the iron barrel bolt into place.
She turned back into the dust-choked hallway. Mounted above the fireplace was the safehouse caretaker’s 12-gauge hunting shotgun. Elena vaulted over the ruined kitchen counter, grabbed the weapon from its brass mounts, racked the heavy slide, and loaded four red shells from the leather stock sleeve into the magazine tube.
A mercenary kicked the front door off its hinges, raising his rifle.
Elena leaned around the doorframe and fired. The concussive blast of the shotgun roared through the enclosed space, catching the operative squarely in the chest plate and launching him backward off the wooden porch into the dirt.
She racked the action and sprinted down the rear corridor toward the back door, intentionally firing a second blast into the ceiling to announce her movement and pull the attackers away from the kitchen floor hatch.
"Target moving toward the rear perimeter!" a harsh voice barked outside. "Non-lethal protocols suspended! Take her down!"
Elena burst through the back door into the freezing mountain air, running full tilt toward the dense timber. Rounds snapped through the pine needles around her ears, splintering the bark of massive hemlocks. A round grazed her left shoulder, tearing the flesh and sending a line of white-hot agony through her collarbone.
She tumbled into a shallow ravine, rolling through wet ferns and granite boulders, losing her grip on the shotgun.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the pine needles above. Standing at the crest of the ravine, his face covered in white medical dressings and his eyes burning with sadism, stood Marcus. In his gloved hand, he leveled a black combat knife.
"You've been an extraordinary inconvenience, Elena," Marcus rasped through his burned lips, descending into the ravine. "Where are the assets?"
Elena backed against a sheer granite boulder, her hand slipping behind her back, searching the cold mud until her fingers closed around a heavy, jagged piece of broken granite.
"They aren't assets," Elena spat, blood trickling down her shoulder. "They're children."
May you like
Marcus smiled, a grotesque distortion of scar tissue. "In our world, everyone is an asset. And you're completely out of value."
He lunged forward with blinding speed, the blade arcing toward her throat.
