Chapter 9 - The Contamination Bluff

Victoria's aristocratic mask slipped, revealing pure panic underneath. She took a step toward the boy, her eyes wildly darting across his pale skin, the slight blue tint around his fingernails, and the rapid, rattling breaths catching in his chest.
"Is this true?" she snarled, turning savagely on the medical team. "Can chemical inhalation ruin the transplant viability?"
The lead doctor, an older man with wire-rimmed glasses and cold sweat on his forehead, adjusted his gloves nervously. "The fumigant used in the ventilation system was an organophosphate base. If it crossed the alveolar membrane into his bloodstream, it could trigger severe acute tubular necrosis within six hours. If we transplant his organs now... they could cause fatal systemic toxicity in your body."
"You fool!" Victoria screamed, stepping forward and striking the boy hard across the cheek. Leo stumbled against Elena's legs, his lip splitting, but he didn't cry. Instead, he stared up at her with defiant, burning eyes.
Elena’s fist clenched. Every instinct told her to tackle Victoria over the railing into the churning black sea, but the guards instantly unholstered their weapons, their muzzles leveled at her chest.
"Then we use the girl," Victoria hissed, wheeling around toward Mia. "Her lungs are clean. The maid wrapped her up like an infant. Prep the girl for bilateral nephrectomy! I will take both of hers and double my dialysis intake until the secondary organ settles!"
"She's four years old!" Elena screamed, stepping directly into the path of the doctors. "You take both kidneys, she dies on the table!"
"Then she fulfills her purpose," Victoria replied coldly. "Seize them."
Two guards lunged forward to grab Elena, but before their hands could touch her, an alarm klaxon began wailing across the yacht’s bridge. The massive vessel abruptly shuddered as its starboard engines disengaged with a deep, grinding thud.
The captain’s frantic voice burst through the deck intercomm. "Mrs. Van Doren! We have multiple maritime vessels intercepting our perimeter! They aren't responding to our diplomatic clearance codes!"
Elena looked out past the yacht’s teak railing. Slicing through the black water from three different directions were dark, sleek patrol boats—not local city authorities, but Federal Maritime Enforcement cutters, their red and blue strobes painting the ocean mist in flashing neon.
High above, a massive searchlight dropped from the clouds, pinning The Gilded Sovereign in daylight. A voice amplified by external megaphone echoed across the water with military authority:
"This is the United States Coast Guard and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Cut your engines and prepare to be boarded. All personnel drop your weapons and remain where you are."
Victoria froze, her face draining of color. "How? How could they possibly know we were here?"
May you like
Elena slowly reached into the pocket of her apron. She didn't pull out a phone—she pulled out a small, waterproof emergency transponder that Frank had slipped into her hand just before they were boarded at Pier 42. It was flashing bright amber.
"You told me earlier that you own the city police and the mayor, Victoria," Elena whispered, her voice dripping with ice. "You forgot that my uncle spent twenty years running deep-sea salvage for the federal government. He has friends who don't care about your tax bracket."
