Chapter 8 - The Gilded Sovereign

The interceptor craft were rigid-hulled inflatables powered by triple outboard motors, skipping across the ocean swells at over fifty knots. There was no outrunning them. Within three minutes, the two black boats flanking the trawler boxed Frank’s vessel in, their spotlight beams crossing over the wheelhouse like intersecting knives.
"Cut the engines, Frank!" an amplified voice boomed across the water from the lead interceptor. "You're taking on a fight you cannot afford. Stand down or we board with lethal force!"
Frank glanced at Elena, his scarred face tight with grim realization. "They have us dead to rights out here. My trawler won't take another volley of automatic fire."
Elena looked down the companionway at Leo and Mia. The children were huddled together, looking up at her with eyes full of absolute trust. She couldn't let Frank die for this, and she couldn't let these children go back to that operating table in the dark.
"They want me and the kids," Elena said calmly. "Victoria wants her donors intact. She won't sink this ship if she knows Leo and Mia are on it."
"Elena, you step foot on that yacht, you won't ever walk off it," Frank warned, his hand gripping her shoulder.
"She thinks I'm just a maid," Elena replied, a cold, hard resolve settling into her chest. "She thinks I'm powerless because I pick up her laundry. That is her fatal mistake."
Elena walked out onto the deck with her hands held high above her head. "Cease fire!" she yelled into the wind. "I am coming aboard with the children! Let the boat and the captain go, or I drop the boy's medical records and DNA profiles into the harbor current right now!"
She held up a waterlogged black leather notebook she had lifted from Marcus's desk in the subterranean corridor during their frantic escape—a ledger containing names, dates, donor matches, and offshore shell bank accounts funding the illicit surgeries.
The spotlights shifted from the wheelhouse and focused squarely on the book in her hands. The amplified voice hesitated, conferring with someone over a secure radio channel before answering.
"Transfer to the interceptor. Do not make any sudden movements."
Ten minutes later, Elena, Leo, and Mia were ushered up the hydraulic gangway onto the teak deck of The Gilded Sovereign. Frank was left drifting in the trawler, under armed escort back to the harbor limits.
The aft deck of the yacht was outfitted like a luxury lounge, but flanked by six private security operatives dressed in crisp gray suits, their sidearms holstered but exposed. At the center of the lounge, seated on an ivory leather sofa beneath an infrared outdoor heater, sat Victoria Van Doren.
She had already changed out of her torn evening gown into a pristine white cashmere sweater and cream slacks, sipping hot herbal tea from a porcelain cup.
"You caused an extraordinary amount of damage to my property tonight, Elena," Victoria said smoothly, not even looking up from her tea. "A priceless antique frame ruined. My ventilation system contaminated. And you injured my head of security."
"You're a monster," Elena said, stepping in front of Leo and Mia. "You manufactured your own children for parts."
Victoria finally looked up, her blue eyes as cold and empty as glacial ice. "I built an empire that employs tens of thousands of people, Elena. My intellect, my capital, my lineage—they are indispensable to this world. These two? They exist solely because of my vision and my resources. Without me, they wouldn't have breath in their lungs."
Victoria stood up, gesturing to two men in medical scrubs who emerged from the salon carrying stainless-steel sedative syringes. "Take the boy down to Surgical Prep Three. The girl goes to Room Four. We will begin the harvesting protocols immediately."
"Wait!" Leo suddenly shouted, stepping out from behind Elena. "You can't use my kidney anymore, Victoria!"

Victoria paused, her eyebrows arching slightly. "And why is that, darling?"
Leo smiled, a terrifyingly triumphant expression spreading across his bruised face. "Because while we were running through the chemical fog in the basement... I inhaled three full breaths of the fumigant. My blood is toxic."
