Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Vault

A sharp, chemical odor immediately began hissing through the high brass vents along the ceiling. It smelled of sulfur, bitter almonds, and scorched copper. Elena coughed immediately, the vapor stinging the lining of her throat and making her eyes water uncontrollably.
"Mia, inside my apron!" Elena cried, dropping low where the air was temporarily cleaner. She pulled the girl against her stomach, wrapping the thick cotton cloth of her uniform around the child's mouth and nose. "Leo, stay on the floor! Don't run, crawl!"
Leo grabbed the slack of his dragging chain, muffling the links against his leg as they scrambled down the corridor away from the primary vent. The gas descended like a white, translucent fog, swirling in the draft created by the ventilation shafts. Every breath Elena took felt like breathing in crushed glass, her chest burning with raw fire.
"The boiler room!" Leo wheezed, pointing toward a heavy wooden door covered in rotting zinc sheeting. "Through there!"
Elena threw her shoulder against the door. The rusted latch groaned and yielded, sending them tumbling into a massive vaulted chamber dominated by an enormous, obsolete coal furnace from the turn of the century. The heat from modern auxiliary boilers hummed nearby, but the original coal chute sat embedded in the far wall, a steep angled shaft lined with slick sheet metal leading upward toward the outer garden perimeter.
"Up there," Leo choked out, collapsed on his knees, his face pale and lips turning a faint shade of blue from oxygen deprivation. "It dumps... out near the... the rose garden hedge."
Elena examined the chute. It was angled at forty-five degrees and rose nearly twenty feet to the surface. It was narrow—a child could slide down or climb up, but with an iron chain around his ankle, Leo couldn't get enough traction against the slick steel walls.
"Leo, you have to go first," Elena urged, grabbing a length of frayed rope hanging from an old hoist hook on the ceiling. She quickly tied one end around his waist and looped the other through a secure pipe overhead, creating an improvised pulley. "I will pull you up from below! Push with your legs!"
The boy gritted his teeth, his young face hardened by years of survival. He wedged his small sneakers against the sides of the chute, scrabbling desperately upward as Elena hauled on the rope with raw, bleeding hands. The chemical fog was rapidly spilling beneath the door, creeping along the floorboards like living smoke.
Elena coughed violently, her vision blurring at the edges with black static. She gave one final, primal heave. Leo scrambled up the remaining feet and reached the rusted iron hatch at the top, shoving it open with his shoulder. Fresh night air rushed down into the suffocating shaft like a baptism.
"I've got the latch open!" Leo called down, coughing frantically. "Elena, send Mia!"
Elena hoisted the toddler onto her shoulders. "Climb to your brother, Mia! Look at the light! Don't look back!"
Mia, spurred by fear, scurried up the metal chute like a frightened squirrel. Leo leaned down from the opening, catching his little sister under the arms and hauling her out onto the damp earth of the surface above.
"Now you, Elena! Grab the rope!" Leo screamed from the opening.
May you like
Elena reached for the rope, but her fingers were numb, her nervous system shutting down from the poison gas. She dragged herself into the chute, scrambling up three feet before her foot slipped on the slick metal. She slid back down into the chamber.
Through the fog, the door to the boiler room was kicked wide open. Through the haze stepped Marcus, Victoria's head of security, wearing a full-face military tactical gas mask. In his hands, he held a suppressed automatic pistol, aiming the black muzzle directly at her face.
