Chapter 10 - The ClearingThe winter arrived early, covering the pines in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.

Mark’s settlement with the authorities was arduous and punishing. Nearly all of their accumulated wealth was liquidated to cover restitution, fines, and severance for the employees affected by the corporate restructuring. The penthouse was sold; the luxury cars were repossessed; the bespoke suits were tucked away in thrift boxes.
Mark took a job at a mid-sized logistics firm on the edge of town, working as an operations manager—a grueling, unglamorous job that began at six in the morning and ended at dusk.
Every evening, he walked through the door of the small rental, his jacket smelling of diesel and cold wind, and every evening, Elena met him with a warm bowl of soup and an unburdened smile.
"You look tired," she said one evening, wiping a smudge of grease from his cheek.
"It’s honest work," Mark said, smiling as he wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his head against her chest. "My father used to come home with grease on his hands. I spent fifteen years running away from that, thinking it was a failure. Turns out, it’s the only thing that keeps you clean."
Elena took his hands, guiding them to her belly. Beneath his rough palms, a distinct, powerful kick pushed back against the skin.
Mark froze, his breath catching in his throat. "Was that...?"

"That was your daughter," Elena smiled, tears misting her eyes. "She’s letting you know she approves of the honest work."
Mark fell to his knees on the worn linoleum of the small kitchen, pressing his ear directly against her sweater, listening to the small life flourishing within the sanctuary they had rebuilt from the ashes.
