Chapter 12 - Rebuilding on Solid GroundSix months passed.

The small rental house had transformed into a haven of soft blankets, wooden toys, and the sweet scent of baby powder. The legal battles were officially behind them. Chloe had accepted a plea deal—three years of supervised probation, extensive community service, and mandatory relinquishment of her corporate voting rights. The Vance empire had collapsed under the weight of its own hubris, but in the quiet woods, far from the financial districts, a new life had taken root.
Elena stood in the garden patch she had cultivated along the side of the house, holding six-month-old Grace on her hip. Grace gurgled happily, reaching for the yellow marigolds swaying in the summer breeze.
Mark walked up the path, holding a letter from the state licensing board. He looked stunned, an envelope dangling from his fingers.
"What is it?" Elena asked, shading her eyes with her free hand.
"The board concluded their review," Mark said, his voice quiet. "My personal consulting license has been reinstated with conditions. I can practice independently again."
Elena felt her heart skip a beat. "Mark, that’s wonderful."
"They offered me a desk at a major firm in the city, Elena," he continued, watching her carefully. "Twice my current salary. Executive track."
Elena looked down at Grace, then back at her husband. She didn't speak; she simply waited, allowing him the space to choose who he wanted to be.
Mark looked down at the letter, then slowly, deliberately, tore the crisp paper in two.

"I called the community college this morning," he said with a serene smile. "They need an instructor for their small business development program. It’s twenty minutes from here. It pays enough for our rent and our groceries, and I will be home every single day by four o'clock."
Elena stepped forward, leaning her head against his shoulder. "That sounds like a fortune to me."
