Chapter 2 - The Siren’s ChorusThe siren blared through the quiet suburban streets, tearing open the darkness like a serrated blade. Inside the ambulance, the harsh fluorescent lights flickered, casting a sickly green pallor over Elena’s pale face. An emergency technician monitored her vitals, calling out numbers Mark couldn't understand, his fingers clamped around Elena’s limp hand.

"Her pressure is dropping. Start another line," the paramedic instructed calmly, though the urgency beneath the professionalism was obvious.

"Mark..." Elena whispered, her voice barely rising above the hum of the engine and the electronic beeps.

"I’m right here. Keep your eyes on mine. Don't look away," Mark murmured, leaning down until his forehead almost touched hers. His voice, usually steady and commanding, trembled at the edges. "You’re safe now. Nothing else touches you."

"Why was she there?" The question slipped past her lips before she could stop it. It was the question that had hollowed out her chest for months, long before Chloe ever set foot inside the front door tonight.

Mark swallowed hard, his eyes dropping briefly before meeting hers again. "I didn't invite her, Elena. I swear to God, I didn't know she was in the state, let alone in our home."

The ambulance lurched around a corner, throwing Mark off balance for a moment. He braced himself on the metal rail, his knuckles turning chalk white. Outside, rain began to lash against the small rear window, distorting the red flashing lights into smears of blood and shadow.

Elena closed her eyes against the sting of tears. She remembered the early days—the warmth of Mark’s laughter, the promises made in small, sunlit apartments before his company took off, before Chloe, his former business partner's ambitious daughter, entered their orbit with contracts and subtle insinuations.

"Contraction pattern is irregular," the paramedic announced, looking at Mark with grave eyes. "We're two minutes out from Memorial. Sir, you'll need to step back when we hit the bay."

As the ambulance braked hard against the emergency intake ramp, Mark squeezed Elena’s hand one last time. "You hold on. Do you hear me? You hold on for both of you."
