Chapter 6 - The Fall of the HouseThe news broke before noon.

Financial news banners flashed across the television screens in the hospital lounge: Sterling-Vance Holdings Faces Internal Probe; CEO Self-Reports Regulatory Violations.
Elena watched the screen from her bed. Her mother, who had arrived on the early morning flight, sat beside her peeling an orange, her expression tense and protective.
"He’s destroying himself, Elena," her mother said quietly, offering a slice. "He’s dragging your family’s name through the mud."
Elena shook her head slowly, refusing the fruit. Her hand rested on her stomach, feeling the subtle, rhythmic movements inside. "No, Mom. For the first time, he’s actually cleaning it."
The door pushed open, and Mark entered. He wore an unbranded navy sweater and jeans—no suit, no sign of the high-powered executive who had walked out hours before. His face was pale, shadowed with stubble, but his eyes were clearer than she had seen them in years.
"It’s done," he said simply, stopping at the foot of the bed. "The board suspended me. The forensic auditors are in the building. By tomorrow, the assets will be frozen pending review."
Elena’s mother stood up stiffly, offering Mark a sharp, assessing look before stepping out of the room, giving them privacy.
Mark remained where he was, as though unsure if he still had the right to approach her. "Chloe thought the company was the hostage. Without the hostage, she has nothing to bargain with. But Elena... we’re going to lose the house. We’re going to lose nearly everything."
Elena smiled weakly, extending her hand toward him. "Did you lose the man I fell in love with?"
May you like
Mark closed the distance between them, falling onto his knees beside the mattress and burying his face into her hands. "No. I think I finally found him again."
"Then we haven't lost anything," Elena whispered, her fingers tangling in his hair.
