Chapter 5 - The Ledger of DeceitBy dawn, Mark was standing in the penthouse office of Sterling-Vance Holdings. The city below was shrouded in a dense morning fog, yellow taxi lights cutting through the grey mist like fireflies.

The door opened without a knock. Chloe walked in, dressed immaculately in a slate-gray wool coat, a slim leather folder tucked under her arm. She didn't look like a woman who had shoved an expectant mother twelve hours earlier; she looked like an executive about to chair an annual meeting.

"I see you didn't go to the club," Chloe said, setting the folder on his mahogany desk. "A tactical error."

"There is no tactic left, Chloe," Mark replied, staying by the window with his back turned to her.

"Inside that folder is the paper trail showing the shell company transfers you authorized three years ago to keep your proprietary patents out of my father’s reach," she stated calmly, sitting down in the leather chair opposite his desk. "Sign the transfer of majority voting rights to me, and it stays buried. Refuse, and the SEC receives an anonymous packet by noon."

Mark turned around slowly. He looked exhausted, but the frantic terror from the previous night was gone, replaced by a quiet, resolved clarity.

"Do you know what I heard all night, Chloe?" he asked softly.

Chloe tilted her head, slightly irritated by his detour. "Enlighten me."

"A heartbeat," Mark said, walking over to the desk. "A tiny, fragile, stubborn heartbeat through a plastic speaker. It sounded like a tiny drum. And standing there, listening to it, I realized something."

"Mark, don't be sentimental. It doesn't suit you."

"I realized that I spent seven years building an empire out of fear—fear of being poor again, fear of being insignificant," Mark continued, his voice calm, ringing clear in the expansive room. "And I allowed you and your family to hold a leash around my neck because I thought the empire was who I was."

He reached out, took the leather folder, and without opening it, dropped it into the wastebasket beside his desk.

Chloe’s composure fractured for a fraction of a second, her brow furrowing. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Call the regulators," Mark said simply. "I’ll walk into their office myself at nine o'clock."
