Chapter 4 - Fragile TrucesElena lay propped up in the hospital bed, the rhythmic, comforting thump-thump of the fetal monitor filling the small room. The sound was a steady metronome of survival, yet the silence between her and Mark was deafening.

Mark sat in the vinyl armchair beside the bed, his head resting against his hands. The leather jacket was draped over the back of the chair, his white shirt rumpled and creased.
"You should go home, change," Elena murmured, her voice thin.
"I’m not leaving you," he replied without looking up.
"Mark." She waited until he finally lifted his tired eyes to meet hers. "Why does she have this hold on you? Don't lie to me anymore. I fell tonight because I realized how little I actually know about the life you built around us."
Mark rubbed the bridge of his nose. The truth sat between them like a shard of glass. "Five years ago, when the company was on the brink of bankruptcy, Chloe’s father offered a lifeline. But the contract had riders. Personal clauses. Chloe was meant to be a partner in everything—the equity, the public image, the legacy."
"And you led her on," Elena said, the words flat, carrying no anger, only an immense, crushing sadness.
"I was ambitious and reckless," Mark admitted, his voice cracking. "Then I met you. You didn't care about the boardrooms or the acquisitions. You saw me. I tried to buy Chloe out. Her father died last winter, and she inherited the full portfolio. She doesn't want the payout, Elena. She wants retribution. She thinks taking away our stability will force me back into her orbit."
"She almost killed our child, Mark."
"I know." He reached out, his hand trembling as he rested it over her fingers. "And that is why I am ending it. Not with money. Not with deals. I'm going to tear it down myself."

"And what happens to us if you lose everything?" Elena asked, looking straight into his eyes.
Mark leaned forward, kissing her knuckles. "If I have you and this baby, I haven't lost anything that matters."
