Chapter 8 - The Awakening of StrengthA week later, Elena was discharged.

They did not return to the sprawling, echoing modern house with its pendant lights and polished oak floors. That house was a museum of unresolved ambition and trauma. Instead, they moved into a modest, two-bedroom furnished rental on the outskirts of the city, overlooking a quiet stretch of pine woods.
The change was jarring, but to Elena, the air felt lighter.
She sat on the porch, wrapped in a thick knit cardigan, watching the late afternoon sun filter through the pine needles. Mark was in the kitchen, awkwardly attempting to cook a soup from scratch, the clatter of pots and pans a sweet, imperfect soundtrack to their new reality.
A car door closed out front.
Elena leaned forward slightly. Walking up the gravel pathway was not an investigator, nor a delivery driver, but Chloe. She wore no makeup, her blonde hair pulled back into an uncharacteristically messy knot, an oversized trench coat swallowed her frame.
She stopped at the foot of the wooden porch steps, looking up at Elena. The arrogance was stripped away, replaced by an unsettling, hollow desperation.
"You shouldn't be here," Elena said, her voice steady, surprisingly devoid of fear.
"I need you to not sign the police statement," Chloe said bluntly, her voice cracked at the edges. "They're threatening a grand jury, Elena. They want to make an example out of me because of the financial scandal."
Mark appeared at the screen door, a heavy wooden spoon in hand, his entire body tensing as he saw the visitor. "Get off this property, Chloe."

Elena raised a hand, stopping Mark before he could step outside. She looked down at the woman who had terrorized her peace, who had treated her unborn child like collateral damage.
"Why, Chloe?" Elena asked quietly. "Why should I spare you?"
