Chapter 1 - The Gathering TempestThe fluorescent lights of Vanguard Holdings buzzed with an uncaring, sterile hum. To anyone on the forty-second floor, Clara Hayes had always been an exemplary senior financial analyst—punctual, incisive, and unyielding in her work ethic. Yet over the past six months, her growing belly had turned her from an indispensable asset into an inconvenient liability in the eyes of Arthur Vance.

Arthur was the youngest managing director in firm history. He measured human worth strictly by quarterly balance sheets, ruthless billable hours, and unquestioned dominance. When Clara gripped the edge of her birch veneer desk, gasping as a sharp, wrenching contraction ripped through her lower back, Arthur didn’t call emergency medical services. Instead, his patent leather shoe lashed out, sending her black canvas bag spinning across the carpet, spilling baby clothes, diapers, and months of preparation into the dust.

"You're fired! Get your trash and leave!" Arthur barked, his voice vibrating off the glass partitions.

In the hallway, colleagues froze. Elena, Clara’s closest collaborator, took half a step forward, her eyes wide with shock, but Arthur’s cutting glare pinned her to the floorboards. Survival instincts silenced the floor. Nobody moved.

Except Frank.

Frank was fifty-two, quiet, and carried himself with the heavy, unhurried grace of a man who had seen too much world to be intimidated by tailored fabric. For three years, he had pushed his yellow janitorial cart down these polished corridors, dusting monitors, emptying wastebaskets, and offering gentle smiles to overworked staff. As Arthur raised his phone to his mouth to scream into the microphone—"Execute the protocol now!"—Frank halted his mop. His weathered hands tightened on the wooden handle.

Clara slumped over her desk, her knuckles white against the wood. "Arthur, please... my water broke. I need an ambulance..."

"Security will escort you to the curb," Arthur sneered coldly. "Your personal drama ends where our fiscal quarter begins."

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind them, the midday sunlight was suddenly sliced by the dark silhouette of six black Chevy Suburbans, cruising in rigid military formation straight toward the corporate plaza below.
