Chapter 13 - Facing the ReckoningAcross town, in the high-ceilinged courtroom of the federal district court, Arthur Vance sat at the defense table. His tailored suits were long gone, replaced by a drab prison jumpsuit.

The jury had taken less than two hours to deliberate. The evidence uncovered by Clara’s meticulous notes, coupled with the exhaustive forensic audit commissioned by Thomas Ward, left no room for doubt. Arthur was convicted on twelve felony counts, including grand larceny, wire fraud, and willful corporate intimidation.
As the judge prepared to deliver the sentence, Arthur was given an opportunity to speak. He stood up, his shoulders stooped, the arrogance drained from his eyes. He looked at the gallery, where several former employees sat peacefully alongside Elena.
"I spent my entire life believing that weakness was a disease to be eradicated," Arthur said, his voice barely audible. "I thought showing mercy was losing. I convinced myself that Clara Hayes was an obstacle because she had an integrity that I could never buy. I was blind, consumed by pride, and I destroyed myself trying to destroy others."
The judge looked down over his spectacles with unyielding solemnity.

"Ambition detached from empathy is not leadership, Mr. Vance. It is predation. You will serve ten years in federal custody, without the possibility of early administrative parole, and full restitution will be seized from all your domestic and offshore holdings."
When the gavel struck the sounding block, Arthur closed his eyes, finally accepting that his kingdom of sand had collapsed forever.
