Chapter 10 - Unspoken Truths

Elena didn't pull her hands away. She looked down at Gabriel—a man once feared across corporate boardrooms and underground syndicates, stripped of his power, battered and cornered, yet still radiating an indomitable will to live.

""I gave an oath when I took your case,"" Elena said, her voice steady and clear in the quiet room. ""I don't abandon patients. Especially when their enemies are trying to put a bullet through my skull too.""

A faint, genuine smile—the first she had ever seen—touched the corner of Gabriel's lips. ""You're either the bravest woman I've ever met, or completely insane.""

""A little of both is required to deal with you, Mr. Vance,"" she retorted, gently disengaging her hands to finish removing his damp coat.

She worked systematically, stripping away the cold, soaked fabric and draping two thick thermal blankets over him. Gabriel winced occasionally as she cleaned the abrasions across his shoulders and torso, but he uttered no complaint. The sheer resilience of his broken body was astonishing.

Once he was warm and resting under the low hum of an electric heater, Elena sat on an adjacent stool, wrapping her own shivering shoulders in a dry wool blanket. The rain tapped rhythmically against the boarded-up windows, a soothing contrast to the violence of the preceding night.

""Why does your father fear you so much?"" Elena asked quietly, nursing a warm cup of black tea she had brewed on the small gas burner. ""What do you have on him?""

Gabriel rested his head back against the pillow, staring up at the stained acoustic tiles of the ceiling. ""Five years ago, I uncovered a covert financial channel within the Vance Foundation. It wasn't just money laundering. It was funding illegal clinical trials on human subjects—testing experimental neurological suppressants for private military contractors.""

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. ""Neurological suppressants?""

""I confronted him with the encrypted ledgers,"" Gabriel continued, his jaw tightening into rigid lines. ""Three days later, my sports car's brake lines were severed on the Pacific Coast Highway. I survived the plunge off the cliffs, but my spine didn't.""

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The sheer malice of a father crippling his own son was unimaginable. ""And the ledgers?""

""Stored on an encrypted drive,"" Gabriel said, glancing toward a locked wall safe behind the examination cabinet. ""The only copy in existence. With my death, the decryption key self-destructs.""

Suddenly, the house’s low-frequency radio transceiver crackled to life with static, followed by a voice that made Gabriel’s eyes widen in alarm.

""Gabriel, my boy... I know you’re listening,"" the deep, cultivated voice of Senator Arthur Vance resonated through the empty safehouse.
