Chapter 15 - The Final Reckoning

The morning sun broke through the scattered storm clouds forty-eight hours later, casting a golden hue over the neoclassical granite steps of the National Press Club in the capital.
Dozens of news vans lined the perimeter, their satellite dishes raised toward the sky. Cameras flashed incessantly as reporters and federal agents packed the grand conference hall, waiting for the scheduled address by Senator Arthur Vance.
Behind the heavy velvet curtains of the backstage entrance, Senator Vance adjusted the silk cuffs of his tailored suit. His face was a mask of mournful dignity, prepared to announce the tragic demise of his beloved son to an adoring, sympathetic nation.
""Is the speech loaded on the prompter?"" Arthur asked his chief of staff coldly.
""Yes, Senator. The live broadcast begins in thirty seconds.""
Arthur smiled—a cold, triumphant smirk—and stepped through the curtains toward the podium under the blinding glare of television spotlights. Applause rippled through the assembled crowd.
Before he could reach the microphone, the massive digital projection screens behind the podium flickered violently. The feed abruptly cut from the Vance Foundation logo to a stark, high-definition video stream.
A collective murmur erupted through the room.
On the massive screens appeared Gabriel Vance. He was dressed in a pristine black suit, sitting tall and imposing in his wheelchair against a minimalist white backdrop. Beside him stood Elena, composed and unyielding, her arm bandaged neatly in white linen, holding a slender titanium hard drive.
Arthur Vance stopped dead in his tracks, the blood draining completely from his face.
""Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the press,"" Gabriel’s voice echoed through the auditorium speakers with terrifying clarity, broadcast simultaneously across every national television network and digital streaming platform. ""My father was preparing to deliver my eulogy today. Unfortunately for his campaign, reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.""
The press hall exploded into chaos. Camera shutters roared like machine gun fire. Arthur lunged toward the stage wings, his eyes wild with fury. ""Cut the feed! Cut it now!""
""On the server currently being decrypted by the Department of Justice,"" Gabriel continued smoothly, his eyes piercing through the lens directly at his father, ""you will find thirty thousand documents detailing illegal human experimentation, treasonous military contracts, and three counts of attempted assassination orchestrated by Senator Arthur Vance.""
Heavy oak doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a resounding thud. A dozen federal agents led by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation strode down the center aisle, their badges gleaming under the lights.
""Arthur Vance,"" the lead agent’s voice cut through the pandemonium. ""Step away from the podium. You are under arrest for treason and conspiracy to commit murder.""
Arthur backed away, clutching the wooden lectern, his face pale as ash, his empire crumbling into dust on live global television.
Miles away, in a quiet, sunlit room overlooking the rolling hills of a secure compound, Elena watched the broadcast end as the screen transitioned to breaking news alerts. She lowered the remote and turned to look at Gabriel.
He sat by the open balcony doors, the fresh autumn breeze rustling his dark hair. The burden of years of darkness, paralysis, and bitter isolation seemed to lift from his broad shoulders, leaving behind an indomitable peace.
He turned his head and looked at her, his dark eyes warm with an emotion that no longer needed words.
""What now, Mr. Vance?"" Elena asked softly, a faint, beautiful smile playing on her lips. ""Your rehabilitation schedule is severely behind.""

Gabriel extended his hand toward her, palm open, his gaze steady and profound.
""Now, Elena,"" Gabriel replied, his voice rich and full of life, ""we learn how to live."""
