Chapter 7 - Subterranean Shadows

The molten sparks of the cutting torch hissed like venomous serpents against the damp concrete floor. Gabriel shoved a pair of heavy leather gloves toward Elena, wheeling his manual chair forward with swift, economical strokes toward a row of subterranean utility pipes running parallel to the building’s storm drainage system.
""There’s an overflow tunnel that empties into the river conduit half a mile west,"" Gabriel instructed, his voice low and urgent. ""The entrance is behind the secondary boiler. We have ninety seconds before that steel plate falls.""
Elena gripped the handles of his chair, running alongside him through the cavernous basement. The air was thick with mildew, stagnant water, and the pungent tang of melting metal. Behind them, a deafening clang echoed through the corridors as the severed security door fell inward, hitting the concrete floor like a thunderclap.
Heavy footsteps pounded behind them, accompanied by the sharp, tactical clicks of automatic rifles switching to burst-fire.
""Split up!"" a voice barked from the darkness behind them. ""Take them down—no living witnesses!""
""Left corridor!"" Gabriel commanded, pointing toward a low archway half-submerged in murky water. ""Go, Elena, don't stop!""
Elena pushed through the dark pool of ankle-deep water, the cold liquid soaking through her boots. She maneuvered the chair around the corner just as bullets ricocheted off the concrete walls, spraying sharp shards of stone into the air. Gabriel twisted in his seat, raising his weapon with both hands. He fired three precise shots through the gloom. A tactical light shattered, and a soldier cried out in agony, collapsing into the water.
""Down!"" Gabriel barked.
Elena threw herself down beside the chair as a hail of return fire chewed through the brickwork above them, burying them in dust and masonry debris. Gabriel tossed the empty magazine aside, clicking a fresh one into place from a hidden pocket in his coat. His breath was ragged; the physical exertion of the escape was rapidly draining his stamina.
""You can't keep carrying me,"" Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a grim whisper as he looked at her exhausted, blood-streaked face. ""The drainage tunnel has a two-foot vertical lip. You'll never get this chair over it while they're firing.""
""I am not leaving you here to be butchered,"" Elena hissed, her eyes blazing with stubborn defiance. ""Shut up and reload.""
Before Gabriel could reply, a concussion grenade bounced off the ceiling, landing with a splash five yards ahead of their position.

""Grenade!"" Elena screamed, throwing her body over his chest.
The world vanished in a blinding flash of white fire and an earth-shattering roar.
