Chapter 12 - The Iron Will

Elena seized the hard drive and the handguns, shoving them into the pockets of her jacket. She wheeled Gabriel rapidly down a narrow corridor toward the rear utility exit that opened into an overgrown alleyway behind the safehouse. The gray drizzle had intensified into a cold downpour, drumming relentlessly against the tin roof.

""Where do we go?"" she asked, peering through the glass pane of the rear door. In the distance, through the mist, she could already see the flickering headlamps of black SUVs advancing down the gravel access road.

""The old railway yard is three hundred yards west,"" Gabriel said, loading a magazine into his pistol with fluid, muscle-memory motions. ""There's an active freight line that stops at the junction every twenty minutes. If we reach the cargo cars, we can slip out of the regional perimeter.""

""Three hundred yards through an open yard?"" Elena said, looking at the treacherous terrain of gravel, rusted iron ties, and standing mud. Pushing a wheelchair across such ground under fire was suicide.

""You run ahead,"" Gabriel commanded, his voice dead serious, his hand gripping her forearm with unshakeable resolve. ""Take the drive. Reach the federal prosecutor’s office in the capital. Leave me here to hold the rear.""

Elena looked down at him, her eyes flashing with intense fury. ""I told you once, Vance—I am not leaving you behind. We either cross that gravel together, or we die together right here. Stop trying to play the heroic martyr and start helping me push!""

Gabriel looked at her, stunned by her fierce ferocity. For a second, his ruthless exterior cracked, revealing a profound respect that cut deeper than any gratitude. ""You're an impossible woman, Elena.""

""And you're an obnoxious patient. Now move!""

She kicked the back door open. The icy rain lashed against their faces instantly. Elena leaned her entire weight into the wheelchair, driving the wheels through the mud and wet weeds into the alley.

Behind them, the front door of the safehouse was obliterated by a breaching charge. Black-clad operators poured into the building, their tactical lights cutting through the darkness.

""They're through the back!"" an operative yelled from the patio.

Gunfire erupted instantly, bullets kicking up sprays of mud around their feet. Elena pushed forward frantically, her lungs burning, her muscles screaming under the strain of driving the heavy chair over loose gravel toward the dark silhouettes of idling freight trains.

Gabriel turned in his seat, firing three controlled double-taps into the rain, forcing the pursuing operators to dive behind rusted shipping containers for cover.

Suddenly, a heavy rifle round struck the left wheel of the chair, shredding the tire and snapping the axle with a violent crack. The chair flipped sideways, throwing Gabriel hard into the muddy gravel.
