Chapter 14 - The Crossing

The roaring diesel engine of the freight train was deafening, the immense vibration shaking the gravel beneath their knees. Elena threw Gabriel’s heavy arm over her shoulder, planting her boots deep into the mud. With a guttural cry of pure desperation, she hoisted him upward, bearing the crushing weight of his muscular frame.

Gabriel dug his fingers into her shoulder, using every fraction of upper-body power to propel himself forward, his dragging legs trailing behind them in the muck.

Every step felt like wading through wet cement under water. Rain whipped their faces, blinding their vision as they staggered toward the side doors of freight car 404. The sliding wooden door was propped open by a steel crowbar, revealing the pitch-black interior of the hollow cargo container.

""Almost there!"" Elena screamed through the rain. ""Three more steps!""

Behind them, the surviving operative leaned out from behind the container, firing a wild, desperate spray of automatic fire. The rounds pinged violently off the iron ribs of the train car.

Elena felt a searing line of fire rip across her upper arm. She stumbled, a sharp gasp tearing from her throat as her knees buckled.

""Elena!"" Gabriel caught her with his good arm, preventing her from falling. Seeing the blood spreading rapidly through her sleeve ignited a primal, terrifying rage within him. With an explosive burst of adrenaline, he lunged forward, grabbing the iron runner of the train car door and hauling both of them upward into the dark interior just as another volley chewed the wood around them.

Inside the car, Gabriel kicked the steel crowbar free. The heavy sliding door slammed shut with a thunderous crash, cutting off the gunfire and the roar of the rain, plunging them into cavernous, rhythmic darkness.

The train surged forward, accelerating out of the freight junction, leaving the blood-soaked yard and their pursuers behind in the gray mist.

Elena collapsed onto the wooden floorboards, clutching her bleeding arm, her chest heaving with ragged, choking sobs of adrenaline and exhaustion. The darkness inside the car was absolute, broken only by thin slivers of gray light filtering through the slats of the wooden walls.

Gabriel crawled across the shaking floor toward her, his movements frantic and devoid of his usual calculated restraint.

""Let me see it,"" he demanded, his voice thick with uncharacteristic terror. His rough, calloused hands gently pulled her fingers away from the wound.

""It's... it's just a graze,"" Elena gasped through gritted teeth, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks. ""It went straight through the meat... missed the artery.""

Gabriel ripped a wide strip from his own dry undershirt, his hands shaking slightly as he wrapped it around her wound, binding it tight with experienced precision. When he finished, he didn't pull away. He remained kneeling beside her, his hand gently cupping the back of her head, pulling her forehead against his chest.

May you like

Elena didn't resist. She buried her face into his worn fabric, feeling the frantic, thunderous beating of his heart against her cheek. For the first time in twenty-four hours, she let the tears fall freely.

""You're safe,"" Gabriel whispered into her hair, his deep voice trembling with fierce emotion. ""I swear to you, Elena... you are safe now.""
