Chapter 11 - The Voice on the Wire

The voice coming from the radio speaker was smooth, cultured, and devoid of remorse. It was the voice of a man accustomed to commanding nations and bending laws to his will.
""I must applaud you, Gabriel,"" Senator Arthur Vance spoke through the static, the sound crisp and menacing. ""Surviving the penthouse was impressive. Sacrificing half my tactical unit, however, was quite expensive. But you've always been costly to maintain.""
Gabriel pulled himself upright, leaning heavily against the headrest. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the examination table. ""You're getting sloppy, Arthur,"" Gabriel responded into the mounted microphone, his voice dripping with ice. ""Using federal contractors on domestic soil leaves a paper trail even your political allies can't bury.""
A low, resonant chuckle echoed from the speaker. ""The public believes you were attacked by foreign operatives seeking ransom, my son. In twelve hours, a patriotic memorial service will be announced in your honor. The narrative is already written. The media will eat from my palm, as they always do.""
Elena watched Gabriel's profile; his eyes were blazing with a hatred so deep it seemed capable of burning through the walls.
""You won't get the drive, Arthur,"" Gabriel snarled. ""The moment my pulse flatlines, the decryption key broadcasts to every major news syndicate and international regulatory body on earth.""
""A dead man's bluff,"" the Senator dismissed smoothly. ""Do you truly think I haven't tracked that outdated frequency? I gave you this safehouse, Gabriel. Did you honestly believe I didn't install passive transponders within the structural foundation a decade ago?""
Elena froze, her blood turning to ice. She looked frantically around the room, realization striking like a physical blow.
""They know we're here,"" she whispered, panic finally cracking through her calm demeanor.
""Ten minutes, Gabriel,"" Arthur Vance said calmly through the wire. ""Surrender the drive to my men, and the girl walks away untouched. Defy me, and I will ensure her death is slow enough for you to watch.""
The radio went dead with a loud burst of static.
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He grabbed the emergency release handle under the table, swinging his legs toward the floor. ""Get the safe open! Code is 0-9-1-8!""

Elena sprinted to the wall safe, her trembling fingers punching the digits into the electronic dial. With a sharp click, the heavy steel door popped open. Inside sat two loaded tactical handguns, several bundles of foreign currency, and a slim, titanium-encased hard drive glowing with a passive blue status light.
""Take it,"" Gabriel ordered, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he dragged himself into a spare manual wheelchair. ""We have less than eight minutes before the perimeter is breached.""
