Chapter 5 - Bloodlines and Poison

The word hung between them like a toxic vapor. Elena stared at Gabriel, wrapping his silk handkerchief tightly around her lacerated hand. ""Your father? Senator Vance?""
""The very same,"" Gabriel said with a humorless, bitter laugh that ended in a harsh cough. He wiped the blood from his cheek with the back of his sleeve. ""The patriarch of the great Vance dynasty cannot afford a damaged, defiant heir threatening his presidential bid. A tragic murder by unknown assailants generates immense public sympathy. A crippled son who knows where the foundation's missing billions went... is a political liability.""
Elena swallowed hard, pulling the knot tight with her teeth. ""The blast doors won't hold forever. They'll have cutting torches or thermite.""
""They have roughly seven minutes before the regional grid restarts and police are forced to respond,"" Gabriel countered, tapping his tablet once more. The screen flickered back to life with a red warning banner: STRUCTURAL COMPROMISE DETECTED - LEVEL 60.
""We have to get down to the garage,"" Elena said, rising to her feet, ignoring the throbbing pain in her palms. ""Is there a service route that bypasses the express elevator?""
""There is an old freight shaft behind the library. It leads to the sub-basement,"" Gabriel replied, watching her carefully. ""It hasn't been operated in two decades. And it requires manual winching.""
Elena looked down at his broad shoulders, then at her own trembling limbs. ""Then we don't have time to debate it. Let's move.""
Navigating through the ruined penthouse felt like wandering through a warzone. The pristine luxury was obliterated; fine rugs were dusted in white powder, priceless paintings shredded by ricochets. Gabriel guided his chair swiftly through a hidden panel in the mahogany-paneled library, leading into a narrow, unlit maintenance conduit that smelled of iron rust and damp air.
At the end of the shaft sat a rudimentary cage lift suspended by thick, grease-covered steel cables. A heavy industrial manual winch was mounted to the wall beside it.
Gabriel pushed himself onto the cage platform, dragging his lifeless legs across the iron threshold with grim, clenched determination. He refused her assistance, his pride burning through every strained muscle. Once inside, he looked up at Elena.
""You have to release the friction brake and ride the counterweight down,"" Gabriel commanded. ""If the cable snaps, there is no emergency catch.""
Elena stepped onto the platform, gripping the cold iron mesh. She grabbed the rusted brake lever with both hands, leaning her entire body weight back. With a metallic shriek that echoed up the elevator shaft, the brake unlocked.
The lift dropped violently into the darkness.

Wind rushed past them as the iron cage plummeted through sixty stories of black void. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, fighting vertigo as the walls blurred past. Suddenly, a horrific grinding sound shrieked from above—a bright shower of sparks cascaded down the shaft.
Above them, the steel cable was unspooling uncontrollably, snapping strand by strand under the strain.
