Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

For three agonizing hours, Elena supported Gabriel through the subterranean waterways beneath the city. With no light except the dim flashlight of her cracked phone, they trudged through knee-deep current until the tunnel finally opened into an abandoned industrial canal near the decaying docklands.

Morning had arrived, but the sky was an overcast, slate-gray sheet of low clouds drizzling rain onto the rusted iron barges. Elena managed to flag down an old freight utility van parked behind a derelict warehouse—a vehicle Gabriel had revealed under a coded passphrase stored in his offline memory drive.

By noon, they reached a nondescript, single-story brick house hidden in an overgrown district on the outskirts of the industrial zone. It was damp, smelling of neglect and mothballs, but the perimeter cameras were active, and the heavy oak door had reinforced deadbolts.

Elena collapsed onto an old floral sofa, her clothes soaked with filthy canal water and dried blood. Gabriel lay on an examination table in an adjoining room equipped with surprisingly professional medical hardware. The safehouse was clearly prepared years ago for this exact contingency.

""First-aid kit... third cabinet from the left,"" Gabriel instructed, his voice barely above a whisper. He was shivering violently, the shock and hypothermia setting into his paralyzed limbs.

Elena dragged herself up, pushing through her absolute exhaustion. She brought out surgical sutures, antiseptics, and thermal blankets. Methodically, her professional nurse persona took command again, pushing aside the trauma of having taken a man's life hours earlier.

She cleaned the laceration on his forehead, carefully stitching the torn skin with practiced precision. As she worked, Gabriel watched her silently, his dark eyes tracing the dark bruises on her neck and the cuts across her fingers.

""You killed a man back there,"" Gabriel said quietly, breaking the silence between them.

Elena didn't look up from her needlework. Her hands trembled slightly, but she kept the tension on the suture thread. ""I kept us alive. There's a difference.""

""Most people break after that,"" Gabriel noted, his voice softer than she had ever heard it. ""You didn't.""

""I haven't had time to break yet,"" she replied, knotting the thread and clipping it with surgical scissors. She applied a clean gauze pad and pressed it down. ""Your body temperature is dropping. We need to get you out of those wet clothes before pneumonia sets in.""

As she reached to undo the buttons of his drenched shirt, Gabriel’s hand came up, resting lightly over hers. Not with violence or suspicion this time, but with a quiet, heavy intensity that made the breath catch in her throat.

""Elena,"" he murmured, his gaze holding hers with magnetic force. ""You can walk away now. Take the car outside. Take the cash in the floor safe. If you stay with me, they won't stop until we are both in the ground.""
