Chapter 11 - The Hammer of Justice

Three months later, the criminal trial of Evelyn Vance concluded in the county superior court. Daniel chose not to bring Sophie to the courtroom, sparing her the spectacle of the press and the cold atmosphere of legal battle. Instead, he sat in the witness stand alone, his testimony calm, unwavering, and devastating.
The projection screens displayed the video surveillance Maria had recovered: Evelyn eating lavishly while locking Sophie in the cold basement for hours on end; Evelyn slapping away a crust of bread the child had reached for; Evelyn mocking the girl's tears.
When the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation, the verdict rang through the silent room like a thunderclap: Guilty on all counts of child cruelty, aggravated reckless endangerment, and false imprisonment.

The judge, a stern woman with decades on the bench, denied probation outright. "Cruelty toward an innocent dependent entrusted to your care is the deepest betrayal of human decency," the judge declared, sentencing Evelyn to eight years in state penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.
As Evelyn was led away in handcuffs, weeping in ruin, Daniel stood up, smoothed his jacket, and walked out through the double doors into the fresh autumn air. He felt no triumph, only the profound relief of a storm finally passing beyond the horizon.
