Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Front Lawn

The court had granted Daniel forty-eight hours of supervised police accompaniment to retrieve his and Sophie’s personal belongings from the marital estate. When the cruiser pulled up to the driveway, news vans were parked along the curbside. Evelyn’s arrest had leaked to the press, turning the quiet affluent neighborhood into an epicenter of public scrutiny.

Inside the foyer, Evelyn’s mother, Beatrice, stood by the spiraling staircase with two high-priced defense attorneys. Beatrice’s expression was venomous as Daniel walked past her flanked by Officer Rodriguez.

"You are destroying our family name over a misunderstanding, Daniel!" Beatrice hissed, stepping forward with manicured fingers pointed like daggers. "Evelyn has a medical condition! She was under immense stress managing your house while you gallivanted around Europe!"

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stopped, turned toward the matriarch, and locked eyes with her. "Your daughter starved a child whose shoes she was supposed to tie. She locked my daughter in a cellar while she ate imported pastry in the kitchen. If your family name is ruined, Beatrice, it is because it was built on rotten soil."

He walked upstairs to Sophie’s room. Methodically, he packed her favorite picture books, her stuffed rabbit, and the hand-painted watercolor frames of the ocean. He left behind the expensive jewelry, the antique furniture, and every single artifact of his marriage to Evelyn. Possessions were meaningless; only the child mattered.
